Papers of several members of the Yates family of Buffalo and Orchard Park, New York. Includes a printed copy of Elizabeth Yates's 1989 autobiographical piece from Gale Research Co.'s Something About the Author series ; legal papers of Franklyn Buell of Connecticut relating to legal proceedings involved in the voluntary dissolution of the Gentlemen's Driving Club of Buffalo, 1889 and 1918 ; papers relating to the real estate holdings of the Vendome Realty Corporation of Buffalo (headed by Walter A. Yates) and to Erie County's condemnation of the Vendome Garage as part of the site for the new Central Library building of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library ; family and building photographs ; and a brass plate (from a cigar box) inscribed to Morris S. Tremaine, New York State Comptroller, "in honor of his unique record from his associates," followed by a list of ten names, including Harry D. Yates, and dated November 10, 1936.

Elizabeth McGreal Yates was born in Buffalo, New York in 1905. She wrote books for both adults and children, but is best remembered as an author of children's books. A notable success was her 1950 publication of Amos Fortune, a children's book based on the true story of an African prince who becomes a slave in America and later gains his freedom. The book won the John Newbery Award in 195l. She died in 2001 in Concord, New Hampshire.Biographical Source: Something About the Author, volume 128, p....
